Solar Reports

The Somalia Country Brief by GOGLA provides a comprehensive overview of the off-grid solar market in Somalia. Some key highlights include that approximately 36% of the population has access to electricity, with urban areas having a rate of 66% and rural areas at 11%. Over 500,000 off-grid solar products have been sold, benefiting around 2.4 million people with improved energy access. The adoption of solar energy has led to economic and social benefits, unlocking additional light hours for various activities. The report emphasizes the need for a supportive policy and regulatory environment to foster the growth of the solar sector. Despite challenges like political instability and limited infrastructure, there are opportunities for growth, particularly in rural electrification and hybrid systems.

The ISA report on Somalia's solar energy landscape reveals key insights. In 2020, per capita electricity consumption was 23.3 kWh, with only 49.7% of the population having access to electricity. Somalia boasts high solar irradiation levels of 6.1 kWh/m²/day and a specific yield of 4.8 kWh/kWp/day, showcasing strong technical feasibility for solar energy. The country had a total installed capacity of 90.7 MW in 2019, with solar PV capacity growing at a CAGR of 35.9% from 2017 to 2021, reaching 23.538 MW. However, the lack of supportive policies like feed-in tariffs and regulations hinders progress. Somalia aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 through renewable energy investments. Despite being a low-income country with a GDP per capita of USD 1,249 in 2021, international support from UNDP solar projects and the SBCF has boosted private capital investment in solar solutions. Overall, while Somalia has immense solar energy potential, it requires enhanced policy frameworks to fully exploit it.
