Key Solar Programmes

The goal of the Ghana Energy Development and Access Project (GEDAP) is to enhance operational efficiency, increase electricity accessibility, and encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources in Ghana's electricity sector. The project consists of elements like sector and institutional enhancement, enhancement of electricity distribution, and deployment of renewable energy. Funding for the project is provided by global organizations such as the World Bank, the Swiss Economic Cooperation, and the African Development Bank, offering benefits like tax breaks on renewable energy devices. GEDAP aims to increase the availability and affordability of electricity, as well as aid Ghana in moving towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

The goal of the Power Africa Off-grid Project (PAOP) in Ghana is to improve electricity accessibility in rural regions by utilizing off-grid solutions such as solar home systems and mini-grids. The initiative encourages involvement of the private sector to draw in investments and enhance business strategies. PAOP assists off-grid companies with technical support, partners with the Ghanaian government to enhance policies, carries out market surveys, and provides training programs to build capacity. PAOP is bringing electricity to rural areas and promoting collaboration with sectors such as agriculture and health by assisting in the implementation of off-grid solutions. USAID's broader initiative aims to enhance access to off-grid electricity and promote sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa, with special focus on efforts in Ghana.

The Africa Mini-grids Program (AMP) aims to transform energy markets in Africa through commercial investments in solar battery mini-grids. Implemented by UNDP, GEF, RMI, and AfDB, the program focuses on enhancing economic development and livelihoods by increasing access to reliable electricity in underserved communities. By promoting solar battery mini-grids, the AMP supports local businesses, fosters job creation, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promoting environmental sustainability. The program also encourages private sector investments in innovative solar energy solutions, creating a conducive environment for scalable development. Overall, the Africa Mini-grids Program is a holistic approach to addressing energy poverty and advancing sustainable development through solar energy deployment in Africa.
