Key Solar Programmes

The Bhutan Solar Initiative Project (BSIP) is an essential project that aims to integrate solar energy into Bhutan's national grid to create a sustainable energy source. The primary objectives of the project include diversifying Bhutan's energy sources, reducing reliance on hydropower, and enhancing energy security, all while showcasing the viability of solar power in the nation.

The BSIP involves initiatives like a 250 kW Rooftop Solar PV at Centenary Farmers Market in Thimphu and a 500 kW Ground-Mounted Solar PV at Dechencholing, Thimphu, which have demonstrated great efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The project also centers on providing training to De-suups in solar PV installation, which enhances their skills and opens potential business prospects. In terms of the environment, the BSIP supports Bhutan's climate goals and decreases reliance on winter electricity imports, ultimately lowering the carbon footprint. The project's economic advantages are substantial, producing significant income and demonstrating Bhutan's progressive stance on sustainable development and environmental conservation. Future goals for the BSIP involve increasing solar capacity and investigating energy export possibilities to nearby nations such as India and Bangladesh.
