As of 2021, Bangladesh’s total energy supply was 1,167,000 TJ, with renewable energy contributing around 2.5%. The primary sources of renewable energy in Bangladesh are bioenergy and solar power. The report highlights the country’s efforts to increase renewable energy capacity through various initiatives and policies, such as the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan. Despite these efforts, Bangladesh still relies heavily on fossil fuels, indicating a need for further investment in renewable energy to achieve greater energy security and sustainability. The report “100% Renewable Energy for Bangladesh” outlines a comprehensive plan for transitioning Bangladesh to 100% renewable energy by 2050. It emphasizes that this shift is not only feasible but also economically beneficial and environmentally necessary. The study highlights the potential of solar and wind energy, estimating a combined capacity of 150 GW. It also discusses the need for significant investments in infrastructure and storage solutions to support this transition. The report underscores the importance of policy support, capacity building, and international cooperation to achieve these goals. Additionally, it projects substantial reductions in CO2 emissions and improvements in energy security and job creation. As Bangladesh targets to achieve 100% Renewable Electricity by 2050, this report tries to highlight 100% RE pathways for the country using three scenarios - Reference case, Renewables 2.0 °C, Renewables 1.5 °C.
